A system has been developed by the researchers in order to capture the videos of the plant movement under very windy conditions and it also includes stem failure or lodging. Now the farmers and plant breeders can build their own automated field camera tracks system in order to collect the data on the dynamic plant traits like crop lodging and movement as well as in order to reduce the losses in crop yield.
When a plant falls or bends over due to its high winds and diseases, wet soil, lodging occurs at the time. As per the researchers, currently multiple filed camera track systems are available but this system by the researchers is proprietary and primarily designed for the container crop phenotyping. This system is open source as well as less expensive and easier to construct and it is envisioned by the researchers that this system can open the possibility for the discovery of the novel plant phenotypes. These findings of the researchers have been published in many news papers in which it is reported that a camera is used across the field on parachute cord in order to take the photos of lodging.
This camera tracking upgrade with the support of the WordPress Customization India is allowing the researchers for recording the real time plant traits at various locations in the experimental field. Through this technology, the plant breeders are enabling in collecting lodging data in the real time which will be very helpful in improving the lodging resistance of cereals.
The camera system can capture the lodging in least time as well as it is saving many hours of time in comparison to measuring it manually that can take three hours. In addition to this, this technology is leading the possibilities of high throughput phenotyping as well as it is opening source nature that will allow for the further adaptation in order to grower and breeder data collection needs.
In their experiment, they took the multiple videos of the crop movement at varying wind speeds at the fixed locations as well as they are able in quantifying the movement by using it.
